sept.22 fences

Fences and you are completing your final project, reflect on your overall understanding of the play.

Which character, conflict, or theme has stood out to you the most, and why? Explain how your project represents what you learned about the play.

 Response

Troy Maxson was definitely the character that stuck with me the most. He’s super frustrating because he’s constantly pushing his family away, but you can also see that he’s just a guy who got crushed by life and doesn't know how to handle it. My project focuses on the "fence" metaphor, showing how he thought he was building a wall to protect his family, but he was actually just trapping them and making it impossible for them to really connect with him.

 Summary

The play is basically about how the stuff we go through—like racism or missed opportunities—can turn into baggage that we accidentally dump on the people we love. My project breaks down how every character has their own "fence," and it shows that while those walls might feel safe at first, they usually end up doing more harm than good by keeping everyone isolated.

 Reflection

Doing this project made me realize that Troy wasn't just a "bad guy." He was a product of his environment, and he was so scared of failing that he ended up failing his family anyway. It taught me that if you don't deal with your own issues, you’re probably going to end up passing them on to the people around you. It was a pretty heavy realization, but it made me look at the play—and even real-life relationships—a lot differently.
