Sept.15 fences
In Scene 4, Troy explains his beliefs about his responsibilities as a father. Beyond providing food, clothing, and shelter, what do you believe a parent owes their child emotionally? Should love, encouragement, friendship, and support be expected, or are those things separate from a parent's responsibilities? Explain your perspective.
Response
Beyond physical needs, a parent owes a child emotional security, validation, and unconditional support. These are not optional "extras" but fundamental responsibilities, as they form the foundation of a child's self-worth and ability to function in the world.
Summary
While some view parenting as a transactional duty of provision, true parental responsibility requires emotional presence. Neglecting the heart while providing for the body creates a void that hinders a child's development.
Reflection
Troy Maxson’s struggle illustrates that providing for a child’s physical survival is insufficient if the emotional connection is absent. Parenting is a relational commitment; without love and encouragement, the "fence" of duty becomes a barrier to genuine connection.
