Sept.11 fences book

Prompt: In Fences, Troy makes it clear that he believes his main responsibility as a father is to provide for Cory, not necessarily to like him or make him happy. Do you think parents have to like their children, or is it enough for them to love, provide for, and take care of them? Explain the difference between loving someone and liking someone. Do you agree or disagree with Troy's view of parenting? Explain your response and make a personal or real-world connection

Response

I think Troy’s way of thinking is way too harsh. He acts like being a dad is just a job where you pay the bills and that’s it. But there’s a big difference between loving someone and liking them. Loving someone is a commitment, but liking them means you actually want to hang out with them and you respect who they are. If a parent only provides for a kid but doesn't "like" them, the kid is going to grow up feeling like they’re just a burden. I totally disagree with Troy because parenting should be about building a relationship, not just keeping someone alive.

 Summary

Troy thinks providing for a kid is the only thing that matters. I think that’s wrong because you need to actually like your kids to have a real bond. Without that, you’re just a provider, not a parent.

 Reflection

I’ve seen this in real life—some parents give their kids everything they want, but they never actually talk to them or care about what they like. It’s sad because those kids usually end up feeling pretty lonely. To me, being a good parent means you have to show up for your kid emotionally, not just financially. If you don't like your kid, you’re missing out on the best part of being a parent.
