sept.10 fences

In Fences, Lyons asks his father, Troy, to lend him money. Do you think adult children should ask their parents to borrow money, or should they be expected to handle their financial problems on their own? Explain your opinion and connect it to your own experiences, observations, or beliefs about family and money

Response

Honestly, I think adult kids should try their hardest to handle their own money. Being an adult is all about being independent, and if you’re always asking your parents for cash, you never really learn how to manage your own life. That said, life is unpredictable. If someone loses their job or has a huge emergency, it’s okay to ask for help because that’s what family is for. The problem is when it becomes a habit. If you’re just asking for money because you’re bad at budgeting or don't want to work, that’s when it starts to mess up the relationship.

 Summary

The main point is that you should be responsible for yourself, but it’s okay to lean on family during a real crisis. Borrowing money should be a "last resort" move, not a regular thing you do to avoid growing up.

Reflection

Looking at it from my perspective, I’ve seen how money can make things awkward between people. Even in my own life, I’ve realized that when you owe someone money, it changes how you talk to them—you feel like you owe them something more than just the cash. I think the best way to keep a good relationship with your parents is to show them you’re trying your best to be independent. If you do have to borrow, you should treat it like a serious business deal so you don't lose their trust.
